About

Palm Beach Modern Quilt Guild

We're a community of modern quilters in South Florida - from first-timers at their sewing machine to juried-show regulars. We meet once a month, host workshops with leading teachers, mount juried exhibitions across the state, and sew community quilts for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Hometown Heroes program.

What we do

  • Monthly meetings on the first Saturday - show-and-tell, announcements, and a program (demos, lectures, trunk shows, skill-builders).
  • Workshops with visiting teachers like Cindy Grisdela, Maria Shell, Carolina Oneto, David Owen Hastings, Nancy Knoll, and Mel Beach.
  • Members-only sew days for Hometown Heroes community quilts and guild challenges.
  • Juried exhibitions - Sew Florida, Pieced in Paradise, Fired & Fabricated at HATCH 1121, GardensArt at PBG City Hall, and more.
  • Retreats and trips - annual retreats and excursions to major shows like QuiltCon.

What “modern quilting” means

Modern quilting is traditional quiltmaking with a fresh voice. It leans toward bold colors, high contrast, solid fabrics, improvisational piecing, alternate grids, and minimalism - while staying rooted in the long history of quilting as both functional and artistic work.

We take inspiration from the Gee's Bend quilters, Anni Albers, Nancy Crow, Sister Corita Kent, Faith Ringgold, Sarah Nishiura, and the broader Modern Quilt Guild.

Community quilts

Our Hometown Heroes partnership with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office creates quilts presented to deputies and families impacted by line-of-duty events. We hold regular “Piecing for the Police” sew days and present finished quilts at PBSO award ceremonies throughout the year.

Who runs the guild

The guild is run entirely by volunteer board members and committee chairs. See the board roster for the current line-up. Every member can propose programs, lead workshops, and run for the board.
